Beach School is proud of the McHugh Library Program, staffed 50 % time by a professional teacher-librarian and trained library paraprofessional on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays. The teacher-librarian meets with all classes weekly to promote a love of books and an integrated program relating library standards and curricular standards. Research projects begin in Kindergarten, with flexible scheduling available to classroom teachers to spend additional hours in the library for research using both print, electronic and online resources.

There is currently more than one way Beach students can read a book in the library, in the classroom, in the computer lab or at home. The library has recently added electronic books to the mix. Beach students are guided through the research process by their classroom teacher, the teacher-librarian and the computer specialist. When doing research, we want students to have access to high quality, vetted information from several sources. The use of print books necessitates that students share books with students in their own classroom and other classrooms. One advantage of the electronic book is that it is a way to allow simultaneous use of the same book at any time at school (library, classroom, computer lab) or at home 24/7. Electronic books can be accessed on the Beach Library website . Select Beach Elementary School, Library Catalog, and then search for “ebooks” in the text or visual catalog. Books are meant to be “read online”.

TumbleBooks are animated picture books which immerse students in the joys of reading in a format they find engaging. TumbleBooks are created by taking popular picture books, and adding sound, music, animation, and narration to create an electronic book which the student can read, or have read to him/her. The TumbleBookLibrary collection (an online database with an annual subscription fee) is accessible online from any computer with an Internet connection, or from home through a link on the Beach Library website. Select Beach Elementary School and then look for the Tumblebooks link on the right-hand side of the homepage. World Book Online is another subscription database accessible through the library’s homepage.

Literacy is celebrated in a variety of ways through the library program, including author or illustrator visits, school wide reading initiatives, student volunteers (Beach Booksters-4th and 5th grade), bookclubs (student and faculty) and bookfairs.
